BIRTH
According to her tombstone, Phebe Queal was born 11 March 1813.
BAPTISM
WHO ARE PHEBE’S PARENTS?
Multiple census indicate that Phebe’s father is George S Queal.
Two daughters born to George S Queal between 1810 and 1820 indicate there was probably a marriage between 1810 census and birth of first child in 1813. This wife #2 for George may have been Mahalie Mitchell McIntyre (Queal).
A family letter, written in preparation for a 1938 family reunion includes information on the Queal branch of the family. It states that Phebe’s mother is Mahalie. [Important to know that documenting the data in this letter has revealed that some of the data is accurate and some is not.]
SISTER TO PHEBE
The two daughters born between 1810 and 1820 to George S Queal and wife #2:
Phoebe Queal born 11 March 1813 (based on date on tombstone)
Sylvia Queal born May 1815 (based on 1880 Census)
DEATH OF PHEBE’S MOTHER
Based on future census information, the wife of George S Queal in US Federal Census for 1820 is the Matilda (unknown surname) born in 1800. As Matilta would have been 13 at the time of birth of Phebe in 1813, Matilda would appear to be too young to be Phebe’s mother. Therefore, George’s wife #2 must have died prior to 1820 and Matilda is wife #3.
Note no burial location has been determined for George’s wife #2, who must have died between 1815 (after birth of Sylvia) and 1820 census.
STEP-MOTHER AND CENSUS 1820
As of the 1820 census, it appears that George S Queal has a new wife, Matilda, who was born in 1800.

MARRIAGE
Phoebe Queal married David Terpenning. No record to document this marriage has been located yet. To get a sense of when the marriage took place, we look for clues.
• Prior to marriage Phebe and David were living with their parents on farms very close to each other.
• David and Phebe and two young children are living separate from their parents in the 1840 census.
• Jane Ann Terpenning, daughter of David and Phebe, was born in 1838.
• A family letter reports a daughter, Mahalie, born prior to Jane Ann.
So the marriage is estimated to have taken place in mid-1830s when Phebe was about 22 and David was about 20.

NEW YORK TO MICHIGAN
Family story (based on 1938 letter) says in March of 1864 David, Phebe and children, William, George, Elizabeth, Isaac, Hannah and Alfred, along with Jane and her husband John Myers and their two children, Marth Emma and Libbie Ardella, migrated together from Summit, New York to Jackson, Michigan. When they arrived in Michigan, they stayed the night with Henry Disenroth in Blackman Township in the little old house across from Jackson airport. David then bought a house where the Jackson Airport is now.
However, another source (book: History of Jackson County Michigan 1881) reports the move in 1861. “William H. TURPENING, of Schoharie County, N. Y., came to Michigan in 1861; June 18, 1863, he married Sarah Maria Snyder, oldest daughter of Lewis Snyder, an old settler of Spring Arbor, and pioneers of Jackson County remember his genial ways, and hospitable home on section 23, the first brick house in this part of the country…”
