Born 1834 in Detroit, Michigan. Dairy farmer, later family builders supplies.Died 1913 in California.
BIRTH IN 1834
John Calvert, son of Thomas Calvert and Mary Beal (Calvert), states in an 1890 sworn affidavit that he was born 1 July 1834 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. So John would have been about 56 years old at the time of the affidavit.

DEATH OF FATHER IN 1848
There were a number of affidavits in 1890 when the U.S. Calverts were documenting relationships to a branch of the family in England — related to inheritance matters in England. The goal appears to be to prove that John Calvert was the only surviving child of Thomas Calvert and Mary Beal Calvert. Each offers interesting personal information about the Calvert family history.
Affidavit of John Calvert
Affidavit of William Beal [half brother of John Calvert]
Affidavit of Elizabeth Walker [long time friend of Thomas & Mary]
Affidavit of Robert E. Walker [husband of Elizabeth; long time friend of Thomas & Mary]
Affidavit of John B. Mussche [stone cutter for cemetery tombstones]
Each of these note the death of Thomas Calvert in 1848. John Calvert added more details including his comment “was killed on said farm”. A newspaper article revealed that Thomas was murdered by a hired farm hand.
CENSUS 1850
Tragically, by 1850 two sisters of John had died. Mary Ann born in 1831, died in 1834. Mary born in 1836, died later that same year.

CENSUS 1860 – John Calvert
The family story is that after the death of his father in 1848, John was too young to sustain the dairy farm in Grosse Point. That his mother stayed on for three more years (until about 1851), then moved into town (City of Detroit). Unable to determine exactly when John left the farm, but the story is that he moved “West” to Illinois. We do find a John Calvert of about the right age working as a teamster in the Chicago area in the 1860 census. Not sure if this is our John.

Not for hire may mean he had steady job, possibly drove his employer’s wagons.
CENSUS 1860 – Mary and Harriet Calvert
In 1860 John Calvert’s mother, Mary, and his sister, Harriet, are found living together in Detroit. This supports the story that the family left the farm in 1851. This may further support that John was not living in Michigan in 1860.

JOHN CALVERT IN ILLINOIS
The 1870 US Federal Census is solid documentation that the John Calvert family was in Champaign, Champaign, Illinois that year. The challenge is determining exactly when the family relocate back to Michigan.
There are clues from tracking references through John’s children:
Frank John Calvert
Found in a state publication “FRANK J CALVERT. Republican, of Highland Park, representative from the second district of Wayne county, was born in Champaign, Illinois, March 2, 1875, the son of John Calvert, a native of Detroit, born in 1834, and Mary Threadgould, born in Yorkshire, England, who came to Detroit in her youth. Mr. Calvert has lived in Detroit and Highland Park practically all his life. He received his education in the public…”
Source: Michigan Official Directory and Legislative Manual, State of Michigan, 1943
Harriet Luthera Calvert
Harriet’s February 1906 marriage registration states that she was 26 at the time of her marriage and born in Michigan. This supports her birth date of 29 July 1879.
Source: Michigan, Marriage Records, FamilySearch.org
Considering that Frank was born 2 March 1875 in Illinois and Harriet was born 29 July 1879 in Michigan, the family’s relocation back to Michigan must have been between March 1875 and July 1879.
George Thomas Calvert
According to a biographical article (published in 1922) on George Thomas Calvert, “GEORGE THOMAS CALVERT. Numbered among the successful business men of Detroit for many years was George Thomas Calvert, who occupied a high position not only in commercial circles but in the esteem of his fellowmen, his activities being ever for the advancement of public good. He was the president and treasurer of J. Calvert’s Sons, Incorporated, retail dealers and jobbers in coal, coke and builder’s supplies, theirs being one of the leading establishments of the kind in the state. Mr. Calvert was born in Champaign, Illinois, February 1, 1868, a son of John and Mary (Threadgould) Calvert and an elder brother of Elmer C. Calvert of Detroit, of whom mention is made elsewhere in this publication.
George T. Calvert was seven years of age when his parents took up their abode in Detroit….”
Source: The City of Detroit, Michigan, 1701-1922, Volume 3 by William Stocking, Gordon K. Miller, page 408
The statement “George T. Calvert was seven years of age when his parents took up their abode in Detroit.” would indicate that the John Calvert family moved from Illinois to Michigan during 1875.
Elmer Crebbin Calvert
According to a biographical article (published in 1922) on Elmer C. Calvert, “ELMER C. CALVERT, president of J. Calvert’s Sons, one of Detroit’s leading firms in coal, coke and builders’ supplies trade, was born in Champaign, Illinois, August 17, 1869, a son of John and Mary (Threadgould) Calvert. The Calvert family is one of the oldest families of the city and John Calvert was born in Detroit, July 1, 1834, at a time when the city had not yet emerged from villagehood. John Calvert was a prominent stockman for a number of years, dealing extensively in cattle throughout Illinois and Indiana.
During the boyhood days of Elmer C. Calvert, the family home was established in Detroit and the father became the founder of the business now conducted under the name of J. Calvert’s sons, remaining in that connection during is active career…”
Source: The City of Detroit, Michigan, 1701-1922, Volume 3 by William Stocking, Gordon K. Miller, page 448
If the family did return to Michigan in 1875, Elmer would have been six year old. This is supported with the statement “During the boyhood days of Elmer C. Calvert, the family home was established in Detroit.”
We note that “John Calvert was a prominent stockman for a number of years, dealing extensively in cattle throughout Illinois and Indiana.” may be accurate or it may be a vanity press embellishment of the facts.

Checking Detroit, Michigan city directories there is a listing for 1875 that might be our John Calvert, and one for 1876 that is definitely our John.

Looking at city directory addresses for John Calvert gives us the impression that he sold the condo at 94 Adelaide after his first wife died and four of his five children had married and moved out. Unable to locate where John moved about 1905. It is fun to wonder if John might have moved in with his eldest son, George, who lived at 252 Lincoln Avenue, seeing that the woman John married a few years later was living at 523 Lincoln Avenue. Might they have met at some neighborhood event?
When John married wife #2 in August of 1908, he moved into her home at 523 Lincoln Avenue. He and Annie lived there until about 1912, when they moved to California.

WILL
In his will John Calvert designated his youngest son, Frank J. Calvert, as executor of the will. This will was admitted to probate 1 May 1913. The estate was valued at $21,182.84 of personal property and $5,000 in real estate. The heirs were identified as:
George T. Calvert son Detroit, Michigan
Elmer C. Calvert son Detroit, Michigan
Mary A. Smith daughter Detroit, Michigan
Frank J. Calvert son Highland Park, Michigan
Harriet L. McHarness daughter Elko, Nevada
Annie P. Calvert widow Detroit, Michigan
(second wife)
Because the two elder sons were challenging the terms of the will, Frank suggested that the executor responsibilities be assigned to the Detroit Trust Company.

REAL ESTATE HISTORY
There may be some interesting clues from tracking the property transactions of Thomas Calvert and his heirs since they arrived in Michigan from England in the early 1800s.
At the time of Thomas Calvert’s death in 1848, his widow, Mary Beal (Calvert), his son, John Calvert, and his daughter, Harriet Calvert, continued living on the dairy farm in Grosse Pointe.
In the 1850 census they are still on the farm in Grosse Pointe and the real estate value of $1500 is listed on census line for John Calvert.
The 1890 affidavit gives the impression that the farm in Grosse Pointe was sold about 1851.
In the 1860 census we find widow, Mary Calvert, living in City of Detroit with real estate value of $2000. Separately, we find a John Calvert in Illinois with real estate value of $500 (not proven this is Mary’s son).
In the 1870 census we find John Calvert (and family) in Illinois with real estate value of $1800. Separately, we find his mother, Mary Calvert, in Michigan with real estate value of $1200.
In the 1880 census John Calvert and family are back in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan at 8 Catharine Street. This census does not list real estate value.
In the 1900 census John Calvert and family are still in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, but now at 94 Adelaide Street. Census says owns the house free of mortgage.
In the 1910 census John Calvert and new wife are in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan at 523 Lincoln Avenue. Census says owns the house free of mortgage.
Note John Calvert died in 1913.
