MARY IN THREADGOULD BOOK

The Threadgould Families of Yorkshire is an extensive history of the English Threadgoulds compiled by Stan Threadgould and published in 1996. (397 pages)

On pages 41-46 description the George Threadgould family’s journey from England to the U.S.

On page 47 description of arrival in Detroit, Michigan.

On page 48 description of arrival in Taylor, Michigan.

On page 69 is a photo of Mary Threadgould (Calvert) holding young son, George. Assume about 1868-1869. Comment in book “MARY THREADGOULD married JOHN CALVERT at Detroit. John and Mary had at least one son, GEORGE. Nothing more is known about them.” Sad that the two families lost touch with each other.

CALVERT FAMILY IN ILLINOIS

To track where John and Mary was challenging. There is solid documentation that the family was in Champaign, Champaign, Illinois at the time of the 1870 US Federal Census.

There are clues from tracking references through John and Mary’s children:

George Thomas Calvert
According to a biographical article (published in 1922) on George Thomas Calvert, “GEORGE THOMAS CALVERT. Numbered among the successful business men of Detroit for many years was George Thomas Calvert, who occupied a high position not only in commercial circles but in the esteem of his fellowmen, his activities being ever for the advancement of public good. He was the president and treasurer of J. Calvert’s Sons, Incorporated, retail dealers and jobbers in coal, coke and builder’s supplies, theirs being one of the leading establishments of the kind in the state. Mr. Calvert was born in Champaign, Illinois, February 1, 1868, a son of John and Mary (Threadgould) Calvert and an elder brother of Elmer C. Calvert of Detroit, of whom mention is made elsewhere in this publication.

George T. Calvert was seven years of age when his parents took up their abode in Detroit….”

Source: The City of Detroit, Michigan, 1701-1922, Volume 3 by William Stocking, Gordon K. Miller, page 408

The statement “George T. Calvert was seven years of age when his parents took up their abode in Detroit.” would indicate that the John Calvert family moved from Illinois to Michigan during 1875.

Elmer Crebbin Calvert
According to a biographical article (published in 1922) on Elmer C. Calvert, “ELMER C. CALVERT, president of J. Calvert’s Sons, one of Detroit’s leading firms in coal, coke and builders’ supplies trade, was born in Champaign, Illinois, August 17, 1869, a son of John and Mary (Threadgould) Calvert. The Calvert family is one of the oldest families of the city and John Calvert was born in Detroit, July 1, 1834, at a time when the city had not yet emerged from villagehood. John Calvert was a prominent stockman for a number of years, dealing extensively in cattle throughout Illinois and Indiana.

During the boyhood days of Elmer C. Calvert, the family home was established in Detroit and the father became the founder of the business now conducted under the name of J. Calvert’s sons, remaining in that connection during is active career…”

Source: The City of Detroit, Michigan, 1701-1922, Volume 3 by William Stocking, Gordon K. Miller, page 448

The statement “John Calvert was a prominent stockman for a number of years, dealing extensively in cattle throughout Illinois and Indiana.” may be accurate or it may be a vanity press embellishment of the facts.

Frank John Calvert
Found in a state publication “FRANK J CALVERT. Republican, of Highland Park, representative from the second district of Wayne county, was born in Champaign, Illinois, March 2, 1875, the son of John Calvert, a native of Detroit, born in 1834, and Mary Threadgould, born in Yorkshire, England, who came to Detroit in her youth. Mr. Calvert has lived in Detroit and Highland Park practically all his life. He received his education in the public…”

Harriet Luthera Calvert
Harriet’s February 1906 marriage registration states that she was 26 at the time of her marriage and born in Michigan. This supports her birth date of 29 July 1879. This is confirmation that the John Calvert family was back in Michigan before 1879.

CALVERT FAMILY BACK IN MICHIGAN

Considering that Frank was born 2 March 1875 in Illinois, Elmer recalls that the John Calvert family moved from Illinois to Michigan in 1875, and Harriet was born 29 July 1879 in Michigan, it would be probable that the family moved between early March 1875 and the middle of July 1879.
