BIRTH/BAPTISM OF GEORGE WARD VERRY

George Ward Verry was born 27 November 1839 in the London area of England. He was the first and apparently only child of George Verry and Mary Ward Verry.

At the time of his birth, the family was living at 3 Huntley Street according to registration and baptism records. Later census records state George was born in 1) St Pancras, 2) Islington, Middlesex, and 3) Clerkenwell, London.

The government registration of this birth was made in 4 January 1840 without a name for the male child born 27 November 1839. Parents listed as George Verry and Mary Verry formerly Ward. Family was living at 3 Huntley Street. Father’s occupation was Clerk to a Marble Merchant.

Apparently by February the parents had decided on a name, as the baby was baptized 2 February 1840 at parish of Saint George in Bloomsbury, County of Middlesex naming the son George Ward Verry. His father George was listed as a Clerk.

MARRIAGE #1 – CHARLOTTE WAKELING

By 1858 George Ward Verry had grown up and on 5 December 1858 married Charlotte Wakeling at St Mary’s in Parish of Norton Folgate in Middlesex. This was the first marriage for both groom and bride. Both were listed as living at 7 Pelham Street, Mile End New Town/Spitalfields, Middlesex. George’s occupation was listed as Warehouse Clerk.

Father of the groom, George Verry, was listed as a Commercial Clerk. Father of the bride, William Wakening, was listed as a Cordwainer (a term for a shoemaker who makes shoes with new leather, in contrast to a cobbler who repairs shoes).

Note that on their marriage registration George Ward was listed as 23 and Charlotte as 26. According to their actual birth dates George would have been 19 and Charlotte 30. Perhaps George could not get parental approval for marrying before 21. Or more probably George Ward and Charlotte  just modified their ages to lessen the public age difference. Reviewing documents for both through the years verifies their real birth years as 1839 and 1828. You will find some genealogies incorrectly listing George Ward Verry as being born about 1834-35 – based on this marriage document.

CHILDREN OF GEORGE AND CHARLOTTE

George Ward and Charlotte had two children, George Verry born 1860 and William Ward Verry born 1862. Their first son, George Verry, is a direct line ancestor.

According to his baptism registration, George was born 4 May 1860 and baptized 23 December 1860. The family was living at 40 Russell Street, Bethnal Green, an area of the greater London area where trades people lived. Father, George Ward Verry, was listed as a Warehouse Clerk.

Despite extensive searching, the family could not be found in the 1861 Census. As it has been documented that the 1861 Census pages of Russell Street are missing, it must be assumed that George Ward, Charlotte, and little George were still living on Russell Street in 1861 (in same location reported on George’s 1860 baptism record). Thus, further verification of the 1860 information is not feasible.

THE VERRY WATCH

Something special happened in the mid-1800s; it was the start of the Verry watch tradition. George Ward Verry’s widowed mother, Mary Ward Verry, presented him with the gift of a very special gold pocket watch. There is a high probability that the occasion was George’s 21st birthday. As both sides of Mary’s family (Ward and Dolley) were London clock and watchmakers, the choice of a precision watch should not have been a surprise.

Through the years the family tradition evolved that this watch was handed down to the the eldest Verry son in the next generation on his twenty-first birthday.

Family tradition is that this watch passes down generation to generation to oldest male direct line

On November 24, 2017, as a special early Christmas gift for his mother (Suzan Verry Walter, family historian and daughter of George Letchford Verry), current watch holder, Brian Scott Walter, and his wife, Karen, arranged for the Verry watch to be inspected by a watch expert to see if there might be some indication of who made this watch. Suzan, Brian, Karen, and Brian’s sister, Cheryl “Li” Walter, visited the Aubrey’s Clock & Watches in Issaquah, Washington.

When Aubrey Aramaki and his apprentice, Heather Frank, carefully opened the watch, everyone was thrilled that the full name and address of the watchmaker were engraved inside – G.H. Ive  8 Cornhill LONDON. Also engraved was 2/252, which seems to indicate that this was number two of 252 of this watch design that were made. Aubrey shared that the watch is typical of fine watches created in London in the mid-1800s.

Suzan and Cheryl researched and verified that a watchmaker/goldsmith G.H. Ive operated at various Cornhill addresses in London from 1826 through 1864. He was documented to have been at the specific 8 Cornhill address in an 1863 directory. There had been some anticipation that the watch might have been made by Thomas Dolley (head of the watchmakers guild in London in the late 1700s and George Ward Verry’s great grandfather) or one of his sons, but, while this is an exquisite watch, alas this is not a Dolley watch.

There is a box that lists the names of three generations of Verry sons, who inherited this watch.
George Ward Verry 1855; George Verry 1881; George Letchford Verry 1911

It appears that George Letchford Verry added the names to the box. The reference to George Ward Verry has an error, as his 21st birthday was in 1860 (not 1855). So, either he did not receive it on his 21st birthday or his grandson goofed on calculating his birth year.

Remember that the tradition is that the watch goes to the eldest son in each generation on his 21st birthday. There have been two generations with only daughters, who do not inherit the watch, but the first male child in the next generation can inherit on his 21st birthday. George Letchford Verry had only one child, a daughter. And current holder of the watch, Brian Scott Walter, has two children, both daughters.

COLOUR MANUFACTURER

George Ward Verry was involved in a number of different careers throughout this life. The most interesting was as color manufacturer.

  • In the 1858 marriage registration for George’s first marriage there is mention of George’s first job as a Warehouse Clerk. Remember he was 19 at that time.
  • In 1865 a document related to George’s Freemason installation is first mention found of a new career for him as a Color Manufacturer. The address for this business seems to be 7 Love Lane, St Paul Shadwell, Middlesex. George was 26 at that time.
  • In 1870 the will of George’s first wife, it mentions her husband as George and that he was a Varnish and Colour Manufacturer.
  • In 1871 Census George is listed again as Varnish and Colour Manufacturer.
  • In 1873 George reached a significant milestone. He appears on the Electoral Register, qualifying by owning the property at 7 Love Lane, Shadwell.

Only one case was preferred against him at present, however, and Mr. Lushington remanded him for a week.

Stacpoole and Son, Pinner’s Hall, Old Broad-street, in the city of London, Solicitors for the said Francis Baylis and George Ward Verry.

  • In 1891 electoral register listing for George Ward Verry at Clematis Villa, Hermon Hill, George Lane, Woodford, Essex, also includes business at Love Lane. Must have settled with the creditors. No further mention of the varnish and color company is found. This appears to be the end of about 26 years of this career path.
  • In 1891 George is listed as a Tax Collector based at 1 Pearson Street in a report from the Medical Officer of Health. In addition, in the 1891 Census George is listed as a Queens Tax Collector. It appears that he continued this career path for the rest of his life (24 more years).

Following the descriptions of George’s work through the years, do you agree that manufacturing “color”, “varnish and color”, and “oil” is probably about artists’ paints, rather than house paint?

DEATH OF WIFE #1 – CHARLOTTE

Charlotte Wakeling Verry died 14 May 1870 at age 42 leaving George Ward a widower with two young boys. Her death record verified Charlotte’s birth year of 1828. Death registration listed cause of death as Albuminuria, which is defined as “Presence of protein in the urine. Found in many kidney diseases e.g. Diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive nephropathy, glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome.”

Interesting to review Charlotte’s will information. It seems she is leaving the varnish manufacturing to her husband. Will index says…
