NEW YORK TO MICHIGAN
Family story (based on 1938 letter) says in March of 1864 David, Phebe and children, William, George, Elizabeth, Isaac, Hannah and Alfred, along with Jane and her husband John Myers and their two children, Marth Emma and Libbie Ardella, migrated together from Summit, New York to Jackson, Michigan. When they arrived in Michigan, they stayed the night with Henry Disenroth in Blackman Township in the little old house across from Jackson airport. David then bought a house where the Jackson Airport is now.
However, another source (book: History of Jackson County Michigan 1881) reports the move in 1861. “William H. TURPENING, of Schoharie County, N. Y., came to Michigan in 1861; June 18, 1863, he married Sarah Maria Snyder, oldest daughter of Lewis Snyder, an old settler of Spring Arbor, and pioneers of Jackson County remember his genial ways, and hospitable home on section 23, the first brick house in this part of the country…”

BIDWELL REVISITED
In 1900 census we know that George and Elizabeth’s daughter, Olive, was living at home at 504 Bidwell Street while finishing up her college degree at Albion College. The Albion campus was just one long block down Bidwell Street at East Michigan Avenue.

In 1954 Olive’s granddaughter, Suzan Calvert Verry, enrolled at Albion College. The dorms were full, so the college had purchased a number of homes near the campus and converted to freshmen women’s dorms. One of these converted homes was at the corner of East Michigan Avenue & Bidwell Street and named Bidwell House. And Suzan lived at Bidwell House her freshman year. Just a block from where her grandmother lived over fifty years before.
