BIDWELL REVISITED

In 1900 census we know that George W Rogers’ daughter, Olive, was living at home at 504 Bidwell Street while finishing up her college degree at Albion College. The Albion campus was just one long block down Bidwell Street at East Michigan Avenue.

In 1954 Olive’s granddaughter, Suzan Calvert Verry, enrolled at Albion College. The dorms were full, so the college had purchased a number of homes near the campus and converted to freshmen women’s dorms. One of these converted homes was at the corner of East Michigan Avenue & Bidwell Street and named Bidwell House. And Suzan lived at Bidwell House her freshman year. Just a block from where her grandmother lived over fifty years before.

OCCUPATIONS

Following census information we note that George W Rogers had multiple occupations through the years:

  • Farmer
  • Grocer
  • Agricultural Merchant

ROGERS NEIGHBORS

Interesting family story that in early 1900s there was another Rogers family that lived directly across the street from the George W. Rogers family home on West Erie Street at the corner of Eaton. And this family was in no way related to our Rogers. The poor mailman had quite a challenge delivering the correct mail to the right family.

Our George W. Rogers family lived at 213 West Erie Street in Albion – the white house. The Walter H. Rogers family lived at 214 – the red house. Below are pictures of the two homes taken by Cara Young Terry in 2011.

FAMILY LETTER

A family letter reports that George W Rogers died on his granddaughter Betty Young’s high school baccalaureate Sunday in June of 1920. Betty / Ella Elizabeth Young (Oakes)  was daughter of George W Roger’s daughter, Effie Mae Rogers (Young).

Below is key content of letter from Betty Oakes to Suzan Walter in response to inquiries from Suzan about the Rogers grandparents. We share the special personal memories of one of George’s granddaughters:

Indeed I saw G & G Rogers. [Grandma and Grandpa Rogers] They lived with us for several years. Grandpa R. died on my H.S. Baccalaureate Sunday 1920. I was named Ella Eliz the Eliz from both Grandmothers and Ella from my paternal grandmother.

Funny thing – I never knew what Grandpa Rogers did. They lived on W. Erie St. when I was young & we had lots of Sunday dinners there. Always thot there were only Olive & Effie. [children of George W Rogers & Elizabeth] They never lived on a farm in my memory. [Suzan had heard that Olive lived on a farm.] I know I stayed with them when Esther [her sister] was born in 1907 as I had whooping cough. My Dad & Grandpa both had it as I remember. When I knew them early Grandpa sometimes helped out at Mounteers Bakery & they had ice cream & we could get penny cones.

One other thing – I felt my mother sort of looked down on Grandpa because he raced horses (sulky), smoked cigars, was a Democrat & belonged to the Odd Fellows. Isn’t that crazy? I was probably 4-7 when I learned all this. He drove a pair of horses & had a surrey with a fringe on top. Sure did love to go riding.

IS THIS OUR GEORGE W ROGERS?

Can anyone verify who the man in this photo is? There is some sense that it might be our George.
