SALLY’S ORPHANED CHILDREN
One of Moses and Margaret Terpenning’s children was Sally Terpenning who married Charles Crowe and had six children. Tragedy struck their family in June of 1849. On the 12th of June father, Charles, was killed when a tree fell on him. Just two days later, on the 14th of June, mother, Sally, died in childbirth.
Various family members took in and raised Sally’s orphaned children:
• Lucy Ann Crowe (b 1834) and George Crowe (b 1846) were taken in by Francis Crowe and his wife Hannah Terpenning (Crowe).
• Jane M Crowe (b 1839), Michael F Crowe (b 1844), and David H Crowe (b 1849) were taken in by Michael Collition and his wife Ann Terpenning (Collition).
• Rachael Crowe (b 1842) was taken in by Rachael Terpenning and the grandparents, Moses and Margaret Terpenning.

VISIT TO TERPENNING FARM 2008
In 2008 Suzan Walter flew from California to New York to research ancestors who were living in and around Schoharie County, New York in the early 1800s. One of the goals for the trip was to locate the Moses Terpenning farm in Summit. Suzan kept a journal of her research adventures. The following excerpts relate to locating the farm.
Left home Friday, September 12
Monday, September 15
I decided to stop in at the Summit General Store, per prior suggestion by the Summit city historian. Asked man behind the counter if he had any clues as to where the old Terpenning farm might be. He didn’t, but suggested I talk with two sisters who were in the tiny cafe portion of the store. I invited myself to join the two ladies at their table, and we had a grand conversation as I shared my adventure and that I was looking for the Terpenning farm. Later another woman came in and joined our conversation. She thought that a man who lives across the street from the store had a lot of historical papers and would know something. She called him on her cell phone. He didn’t have papers and didn’t know about the Terpenning farm, but said I needed to talk with Mrs. Crapser. (Later I learned that she had been the town historian for a while.) That night I called her and learned that she no longer had the “papers” everyone seemed to think she did.
Thursday, September 18
Called the Summit city historian to double check the phone number for City Hall. Ended up having a nice long conversation with her. She encouraged me to get her whatever data I had on the location of the Terpenning farm, and she would see what she could do with it.
Friday, September 19
Having uncovered no clues for location of Terpenning farm all week, I followed a hunch and spent time researching US census records for 1800 to most recent available (1930) for where Moses Terpening was. I recorded location along with names of neighbors listed before and after his name in that census. I knew (from Monday) that Moses’ daughter, Rachel, inherited from him, and granddaughter, Rachel Crowe Hicks, inherited from her Aunt Rachel. Therefore, I now knew the farm might be known as the Hicks farm. Important. When I got near 1900 I noticed name Crapser near by. So I called Mrs. Crapser, who I had talked with Monday night. Told her I had an easier question for her. “Do you know where the Edwin Crapser farm was in 1930?” She responded yes and that she is living there. I then asked her if she knew where the Hicks farm was. She said it would have been near by. I emailed the Summit city historian the data I had compiled. That day she went to see the man who lived across from the Summit General Store and had more detailed directions emailed to me and waiting when I logged in to emails Friday evening. I was to go the Crapser address and then go across the street and a bit further along the road.
Saturday, September 20
When I arrived in Summit I followed the directions to the Crapser farm. Turned in at the next farm on the other side of the road. So disappointed that no one was home. Did take picture of the house and the surroundings. As I was backing up my car to turn around to leave, a car arrived. It was the owner! He was very leery of me at first. However, when he figured out what I wanted, he relaxed a bit. Turned out we had a very nice conversation.
He said that he had the deed for the farm that goes back to the mid to early 1800s. I asked if he could make me a copy, and we discussed a number of options of this to happen. (But it never did.)
He thinks there have been several owners between Hicks in 1930 and him. It seems some of the original acreage of the farm land has been sold, but the current farm still has 80 acres.
He gave me permission to take photos. There is a huge black walnut tree in front of the house that he says is over 200 years old. Could be that our great-great-great-great grandfather played in this tree. Also, he said the farm house was originally much larger then it is now. Glad to hear that, as the current size would be way too small for a family of thirteen.
Returned home Sunday, September 21
2008 photo of Terpenning farm with house on left and 200 year old walnut tree on the right.
White blob is blocking out current owner’s image for his privacy.
The Terpenning farm remained in the family for two more generations after Moses. On Moses’ death it went to his unmarried daughter, Rachel Terpenning, who had lived her entire life on the farm. On Rachel’s death it went to her niece, Rachel Crowe Hicks. Rachel Hicks was one of the orphaned children of Sally Terpenning Crowe, and was raised by Moses and Margaret Terpenning and Rachel Terpenning on the Terpenning farm. To the community the Terpenning farm became known as the Hicks farm.
Current address of the farm is 359 Baldwin Road, Summit, NY. It is listed as three bedrooms, one bath in 972 sq ft on 76 acres.
